Biography

Miguel Sangalang is the Director of the Bureau of Street Lighting, City of Los Angeles. His role is shaped by two major responsibilities: the upkeep and improvement of the city’s 220,000 street lighting infrastructure assets; and, the adoption of new tools and new practices to ensure the city meets the needs of its residents well into the future.

More than 100 years ago electricity and the lightbulb were cutting edge innovations that transformed the right-of-way and fundamentally changed how people felt in public spaces at night. Today we have many different technologies that are helping to make our cities safer, but do they make people feel safer? How we can move from just “smart” to “thoughtful” in our approach to technology and create public spaces that are again reassuring.
