Emerging technologies are becoming more indispensable for governments. However, citizens can still be skeptical towards urban digitalization. Because of this, the session will answer questions about the role governments should have in shaping the use of emerging technologies developed in the private sector, balancing digitalization and privacy, how technology can make life more accessible, how to ensure citizens’ virtual security or in what way AI and Big Data can improve urban governance, among others.

Urban safety includes both the objective problem of safety and the subjective individual or collective sense of safety. Digital technologies may contribute to improving both objective safety and the individual feeling, for example in the case of cybersecurity, surveillance or emergency response. But are the challenges of urban security related to the use of new technologies and civil rights or are we facing new situations of insecurity for specific groups?
