Small businesses are the economic backbone of cities around the world. Many faced down ruin as the health and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe. Short-term strategies staved off disaster in some places, but far too many lost their businesses and are struggling to start again. How do we support small businesses in our cities and use them as vehicles to spark a recovery in pandemic-ravaged economies? What role do emerging technologies play?

Innovation is a central element in any urban socio-economic recovery framework. Traditional models of economic growth have become obsolete for facing new socioeconomic urban challenges. Hence the renewed attention to the innovation ecosystem as a cornerstone in developing added-value sectors such as green and blue economies. The main challenge here is how to attract (and retain) human talent in the context of teleworking and industrial relocation.

A 24-hour globally connected planet means a world of cities that never sleep. Nighttime economies can be just as vibrant as dayside counterparts. Entertainment venues kick into high gear, restaurants serve food long into the evening and city services, from hospital to police departments, continue providing support across the city. As people being to leave their homes and venture back into the night, how can cities ensure that they are as safe, prosperous and enjoyable as they are during the day?

The Maximal Impact Foundation strongly believes in the necessity of free and open data and information in solving challenges on a global scale. Too many ecosystems across industry domains are pre-occupied with carving out marginal advantages at tremendous societal cost due to suboptimal implementations of what essentially boils down to data cartels, or often even nothing at all due to the failure of well-intended projects once public funding dries up.

Accessing good data comes at too high a cost to our young generations setting up companies, testing ideas, fixing problems that they inherited from more established generations. Society as a whole pays for their inability to access good data (due to cost. conditions, or absence) via high fail rates, slow innovation, suboptimal solutions, and overloaded ROI models.
