In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, many pundits confidently declared that the world's cities were not long for this earth. The effects of the health crisis on living patterns and urban economies seemed irreversible. However, like in all past crisis, cities didn't die- they changed. How did COVID-19 shape our relationship with cities, and what does that mean for the future?

Speakers in this session discuss the year that cities have had, and what could be in store for them in the future-setting the table for the conversations we'll be having at City Possible Summit.

Urban logistics is going through a major shift. The complexity of forthcoming changes will have an impact on all value chain players involved in the process, as overall activities connecting with the deliveries are expected to become more sustainable with minimal carbon footprint. There is also a growing demand for an immediate and on-time deliveries right after purchase. So how do we ensure an efficient but sustainable logistical service? The desired goal in the medium- and long-term, is to set up a mechanism of mutually connected policies and procedures, flexible for adaptation to each environment, that would be beneficial for citizens, consumers, industry players and other stakeholders.

This manifesto has been developed on the basis of three ambitions and nine commitments, and invites local authorities to adopt sustainable digital technology as a common model for their digital strategies. It does not determine quantitative objectives to be imposed on regions, but rather identifies key milestones along an inspiring trajectory that remains respectful of regional specificities. It calls for a broad consideration of sustainable digital technology by revisiting existing structural plans and creating indicators and methods to be shared by local authorities and the State in order to connect local action with national strategies while they are in the process of being defined. This approach places major French cities at the heart of the search for responsible and sustainable digital projects!

How can we safely bring tourism back in a way that addresses new realities while avoiding the mistakes of the past?

There is an urgency for action at local level for the UN 2030 Agenda. 2030 is not so far away and URBACT new network on localising the UN Sustainable Development Goals will play an important role in accelerating the process. Over almost a 2-year period, the URBACT programme, in partnership with CEMR, is supporting 19 cities of different sizes to learn from each other to reach the development goals for sustainable cities.

The main objective of the network is for the pilot cities to exchange with each other and with other European and International peers, build capacities towards the localisation process of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their territories, and develop tools for localising the SDGs. The network also aims to strengthen synergies between URBACT, CEMR, EU & international organisations in pursuit of the same goals.
In this event we will be presenting the results of the URBACT SDG Localization network (SDGs in Cities).

It requires residents and urban stakeholders to engage through community participation, bridging the digital divide, developing essential digital infrastructure and governance, and building capacity through multi-stakeholder partnerships. It also requires governments to take a strategic approach to digital transformation, understanding its potential, and ensuring that it aligns with existing priorities as outlined in the 2030 Agenda.
