The main problem of the decade issues how cities will cope with fast-changing factors. It should be created in a liveable, inclusive, and competitive frame that adapts to any unexpected future challenges. In the case of Kyiv, just recovering from the pandemic, the city is facing an even larger crisis: a fight for survival. In this session, we will discover Kyiv’s experience and outline how future-ready digital technologies can help cities stay resilient even in front of the toughest challenges, during a war.

Improving air quality is key to more liveable urban spaces, and a priority for many European cities. The transition to a zero-emission transport sector is needed to achieve this goal. Across Europe, schemes to reduce traffic pollution such as low-emission zones (LEZ) have multiplied, and more are planned in the future. What specific aspects need to be considered when planning and implementing LEZ? Are cities ready for the increasing number of electric vehicles?

Urban form cannot be reduced to the physical space as cities are the result of social construction under the influence of experts and accidents. Unconcluded urban processes respond to political interests, economic pressure, and cultural inclinations, along with the imagination of architects and planners and the informal powers at work in complex urban adaptive systems. Understanding the city as a hands-on planning laboratory encourages the involvement of various stakeholders - the municipality, the planner, the architect, the start-up, and the citizen – in one conversation. But how can we amplify this mixing pot of various perspectives of experiencing the city and turn the initial interest into capacity and potential to act?

Cities are dealing with the challenge of ensuring affordable housing for every citizen. The pandemic has emphasized the relevance of having a quality home, and more than ever, the link between accommodation, safety, and health is becoming crucial. But innovative housing models in terms of sustainability and shared areas are not always accessible, accentuating inequality among the citizens. How could cities work on having no citizens without an affordable home?

Today’s big challenges have been faced by cities in different ways. Cities’ performances and their results are valuable information that can help others learn and improve themselves, but replication is not always possible as factors like population, economic development, and city management are not always the same. Over the past two years, many have speculated about the post-pandemic world, what will it look like and how will mobility patterns be affected by it? As restrictions have been progressively lifted, the new normal looks very similar to the old status quo, with congestion levels in cities that have bounced back to their pre-pandemic levels. How has this impacted sustainable forms of transport, safety, and mobility regulatory frameworks? Has the mobility behaviour of users changed? What longer-term effects can be expected from the pandemic?

Known around the world as the Gangsta Gardener, in 2010 Ron Finley set out to reclaim the neglected dirt patches next to the streets by planting fresh produce. After a turf war with the City of Los Angeles for gardening without a permit, he managed to change the law and allow local communities to use parkways as communal gardens. Over ten years later, these gardens have not only grown fresh produce but have also created healthier and more sustainable communities. How can other cities become greener by leading their own horticulture revolution?

Shared, on-demand active mobility are key ingredients of a successful transition to sustainable urban mobility. While the uptake of these solutions depends on specific city conditions and citizens’ attitudes, providing the necessary digital and physical infrastructure is a crucial step. In this session, city and industry representatives will discuss their roles in making multimodal mobility easier for citizens thanks to targeted changes in the built environment and user-friendly digital offerings.

With the rise of active and micro mobility in urban areas, new challenges arise like finding harmony between sharing services and other users of the area. It also includes the increase in e-bikes and e-scooters, the request for safe and secure parking like (chargeable) docking stations, and the need for more data-driven insights. In this session we will highlight several pilots in which solutions of innovative European scale ups are being tested.
