In 2016 with 16,688 attendees and 420 speakers from more than 600 cities, the Smart City Expo World Congress reaffirmed itself as the world's leading event for cities.
In order to identify cities, projects and innovative ideas in line with promoting sustainable urban development around the globe, the prestigious World Smart City Awards were established and are one of the key activities at the leading event. The aim of these internationally acclaimed awards is to recognize, promote and support pioneering city strategies, projects and ideas that can potentially change citizen's lives through their outstanding innovation, impact and feasibility, as well as stimulating inclusive, equitable, safe, healthy and collaborative cities, thus enhancing quality of life for all.
Each year hundreds of proposals are sent in from key smart city players from around the globe, with last year's figures reaching 259 applications received from 45 participating countries. Previous award winners include visionary proposals from Japan, the Netherlands, Brazil, Israel, UK, France, USA, Denmark, Spain, China, Guatemala, Nigeria, India, Kenya, Austria.
Who can participate?
The World Smart City Awards are aimed at both public and private sector, cities, businesses, entrepreneurs, startups, digital innovators, developers, research centers, universities, civic techs, civil society representatives, non-governmental organizations, cooperatives, consortiums (public-private) and social activists, with innovative ideas, researches, analyses, studies, visions and solutions for the management and development of our cities.
Proposals should be related to one of the topics for the 2017 edition:
- Safe Cities
- Circular Economy
- Data & Technology
Cities that demonstrate established strategies, initiatives and policies developed for its citizens.
Implemented projects that are already benefitting inhabitants in a specific smart city area.
Innovative Idea Award
Innovative, bottom-up concepts that aim to achieve sustainable integrated development in cities and can demonstrate feasibility of implementation.
The World Smart City Awards
Winners will be announced at the World Smart City Awards on November 15th in a ceremony that attracts an audience of more than 1,000 key public and private decision makers, providing an excellent opportunity to gain prestige and visibility.
