As one of the world’s largest economic sectors, tourism is forecast to contribute to 11.7% of GDP in 2027. Yet communities are growingly concerned by its impacts, be they economic, cultural or environmental. Smart destinations are those that integrate innovation and sustainability to contribute to advances in the tourism sector and in societies at large. How can local governments responsibly manage a smart destination to balance its impacts?
